So the trailer's out...Pok?mon: Platinum version is looming in our minds. Anddddd, it looks exactly the same as every other Pok?mon game in existence.
The fact of the matter is that they can't keep assuming that making a new region with Pok?mon who's quality are decreasing with each new one presented is enough to enterain us. Granted it is a franchise geared toward kids, but Nintendo does rope in just as much, if not more, profit from people our age: adolescents.
It needs change, ergo, I want customizable options; let me make my own Pok?mon trainer. I want more options than this linear stuff, I want better NPC's and more in game interaction with things that don't seem so robotic. More places to go than like, this bridge that links a tiny region of tiny places with probably three major things to return to after the game has reached the point of technical completion. I wish it was more 'Knights of the Old Republic' style and less...Pok?mon.
Pok?mon has the potential to be a great, entertaining game, but not if they continue to produce the exact same game as quickly as possible to make as much profit as possible, before they rush so quickly that they kill the franchise all together.
Take someone who knows what theyre doing with good RPGs, and let them take a crack at Pok?mon games, instead of these one track minded, babysitters they have over there at Nintendo.
Let me know what you guys think.

I agree, there's so much potential for great games in the whole idea of Pok?mon that if they really tried hard enough they could probably make one of the best selling games in history. I think the reason they aren't making this awesome game is because they realize that no matter what they make, it'll make them money, and lots of it. They've kept the routine and according to stats that I saw somewhere they've ended up making more money with each game. Eventually I think they might make customized trainers, since lots of games have it and it's always fun. Although, they'll probably end up having a few different trainers you can choose from rather than actually creating your own.
Platinum is going to be pretty much the same as any other game but they're adding a lot more. Nintendo is using the DS's WiFi capabilities appropriately in Platinum and they're also adding the Torn World, which I'm guessing is going to be a rather large place to explore and may have something that keeps you coming back.
As for the game after Platinum, I expect it'll be the same old thing. I don't think Nintendo's going to stray too far from the mold they use for every other hand held RPG Pok?mon game. The only way I think they can really make an amazing game is to fully break apart from their usual stuff and maybe switch to a different console. A 3D Pok?mon RPG following the same routine as the handheld ones would be a nice break, even if it is the same old thing. That's my opinion anyways.

Colosseum and XD were 3D RPGs. I liked 'em. XD
Back on topic, yes, it would be nice if they catered to us older fans. There are plenty, and, apparently, especially in Japan. Now, Platinum seems good by my standards, but, like DP, could do better. First off, and I mentioned this to Keith, the stupid 'trainer on accident' thing. Every game (besides RBGY~FRLG) has you become a trainer on 'accident'. GSC, you run an errand for Elm, RSE you save Birch, DP you jack Rowan's Pokémon to save yourself/your friend from Starly. Then the Pokémon becomes 'attached' to you, and you keep it. Excuse me, but BS. Friendships don't happen that way. That needs revamping.
Anyways, more important matters. The games are too linear. Let us stray from the path. Let us find some better 'Easter Eggs'. While not going to far, be more suggestive (Galactic sex joke was a nice step in that direction). And seriously, be more serious! We need more 'this is real life' stuff. Now, games are generally meant to be beaten, but Pokémon makes it too easy... and too perfect. Give the characters some life problems, such as a sick mother, personally life threatening situation (while not mentioning so for the younger ones). Something. Or, simply, make a game directed at older people. The new Pokémon 151 brand seems to be slightly hinting at this, being that they make clothing for older fans... but I'm having doubts.
(Regardless, I'm still buying Platinum from Japan. WiFi minigames and the Torn World ftw!)

I hate to just intrude on this, but even when I was playing the games at a younger age, I just felt that there was something missing from the core experience that Nintendo could put in to make the game new and exciting. I always wanted a few things (and it doesn't look like they'll be coming anytime soon):
-Actual interaction with your Pok?mon: I mean, if I have a Charizard, could I at least ride him? And wouldn't it be cool to have little conversations with your Pikachu, Lucario, et. all?
-Actual interaction with the NPCs: Wouldn't that guy in front of the Pok?mon Center get a little aggrivated with me if I just randomly talked to him for an hour? And you think Nurse Joy (or one of her many cousins-worst plot filler ever XD) would know my name by now?
-On Kait's note...easter eggs, easter eggs, easter eggs!: These are what you get for going a little further, beating a few more people, and doing more than the plotline intends. These are some of the things many people (including me) enjoy about video games in general. I mean, the goat on the bed in Tony Hawk, the talking Marines in Halo 3, you name it. The funny things you find by going the wrong way are what people remember and tell their friends about.
I just feel that the franchise has stayed too close to their original product, and could go in any direction, specifically referring to the RPG games. They need to freshen up, and even if they just let me pick from a set of pre-created characters, I would be pretty happy. Oh, that reminds me...
-Customization: Many games follow this (Fallout 3 and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion especially-w00t bethesda!), but guess who (still) hasn't? Pooookemon! If I could do more than name stuff, that would be the best! What if I feel compelled to put contest stuff on my Pok?mon for battling? What if my actions did something to the world? What if I WANT to join the bad guys and rule the world?
A few thoughts, Nintendo.
((w00t, I r back!))

That is all totally right. I have Platinum and it is pretty much exactly like DP. The only new things that I saw were the new forms of some Pok?mon, more mature humor, a new place (torn world), and the new features at the GTS, and that's about it. Nintendo could do a lot more to the next Pok?mon games in the future.
I noticed that in Diamond, I strayed from the storyline and explored the underground, but that was when I was bored from the actual game. Personally, I think they should add more to the storyline instead of get the 8 badges, beat the elite four, and your a champion. Also, they should add more benefits to the storyline part of the game when you do something in the little things like the contests, and getting items from the underground, and others.
In other words, they need to improve.... a lot!

First: I think a Pok?mon MMO is in order, personally. They have a lot of ground to work with (just check out all the location names on this forum!), and plenty of Pok?mon. I've been a Pok?mon fan for ten long years, and I like the formula, but we need some choices.
Second: Life-threatening situations were mentioned earlier.
If you think about it, every single game is like that. What would those wild Pok?mon do to you if you didn't have a Pok?mon of your own? Professor Oak (And Rowan, in Platinum) says as much. Likewise, those legendaries are wild Pok?mon, too. Think about it. Groudon could stomp your pathetic little Trainer into paste if not for his/her Pok?mon.
Also, can you count the number of times (insert Team name here) grunts talk about "silencing" the character or making sure they don't escape? What do you think they'd order their Pok?mon to do once all the Trainer's Pok?mon are out of the way? Really, who needs weapons when you could have a living flamethrower? Pok?mon are the world's weapons, for good or evil.
Third: As for the "beat the Elite Four, become Champion" thing... I think that needs to be a post-game bonus. REAL victory should be saving the region/world/universe from the current nefarious Team.
I mean, what's more important: Beating the best of the best in organized competition, or thwarting a plan to take over/alter/destroy/do something else bad to the region/world/universe?
I thought so.
And, when/if you do become the Champion, have a challenger fight his/her way up there every so often and challenge your title, just like you challenged the default Champion's. It could be like a phone call from a member of the Elite Four or that region's Professor telling you a challenger has stepped up. It would help make the world more real.
And have a randomly-planned attack by the Team every so often. Nothing large-scale like in the main game, just like trying to steal fossils from the museum or something.
Fourth: Give the world some cohesion. We've got Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Orre, at least. In each of these region's respective games, except GSC, that region has been contained in a little bubble. They have their own Elite Four and their own Champions.
So is the world run by a council of Champions? There's lots of potential here. Let's have some interaction between regions!
In conclusion: Unlike the rest of this thread, I like the formula. But I think it needs lots of tweaking and expansion. They could be doing a lot better.

Don't be hatin', sister! I don't not like the chasis, it's just that the car could use a new paint job (excuse my metaphor). I like how it works, but the games are very similar to each other, and could use a new twist to liven up the game some more: throw in a few twists on the original game.
For me, I like how the Pokémon franchise keeps it's originality, keeps the players in a familiar story line, and constantly re-lives the glory days, but I just think that it's missing a few things that make a lot of games on the market right now...well, fun. And when I say this, I mean beyond the occasional pinball/puzzle game or the Ranger series:
I want to see how they could integrate customization and real-life concepts into the game and keep it as a fresh experience that appeals to the hardcore fan as well as to the guy who just picked it up, and not make either of them feel alienated from the game.

Who's hating? I pretty much wound up saying exactly what you just said.
What I wanna see most is some reaction. If I hand a freaking Moltres to the massage lady, I wanna see some astonishment - after all, how many places can you find one of those things? (Aside from the game source code...)
