Sometime at night Chad and Salamence landed in Hearthome. The city was bigger than Chad remembered and he knew he would have a tough time finding Sarah. "Return." Chad said after he had dismounted Salamence. A thin red beam of light shot from the end of the pokeball Chad was holding and it retracted Salamence within seconds. Salamence had landed relatively close to the Hearthome Pok?Center which Chad was grateful for, not having to walk as far. The doors to the center opened automatically and Chad stepped inside where it was much warmer than the chilly outdoors. "Need a room?" Nurse Joy asked, noticing Chad. Chad nodded and payed for the room. Nurse Joy handed him his key card and he muttered his thanks as he headed up to his room. Chad had no idea what to say to Sarah and he thought about how to bring up the subject of Jessica as he brushed his teeth and put on his pajamas. Chad needed to take his mind off of things so he practiced a few of his Psychic excercises. He managed to lift the pen on his nightside table about an inch in the air before it came down to the ground a few seconds later. He was satisfied with this and he went to bed.
Chad almost forgot where he was when he awoke the next morning but after he fully woke up he remembered. He sighed and got ready for the day by showering, brushing his teeth and getting dressed. After having breakfast at a nearby restaurant Chad decided it was time to look for Sarah, if she was even up yet. As he walked around, looking for her familiar dark hair in the crowd of people that were here he noticed the poffin shop and headed in. A bell above the door rung as he walked in and a lady at the counter looked up and smiled. "Here to make a poffin?" She asked. "Uh, no thanks. I'm actually just looking for someone." Chad responded looking around to see if Sarah was there. "May I ask who?" The lady asked. "Sarah Chikara, I kno-" Chad began before being interrupted. "Oh, Sarah! She comes here every day around 10-ish. I'll tell her you stopped by if you'd like, or you can just wait here for her." Chad didn't really want to wait around in the poffin shop, which smelled like burnt food and old people. "If you could tell her Chad stopped by that'd be great." He said politely. The woman nodded. "Are you sure you don't wanna stick around?" "Nah, I'm fine." Chad said trying not to sound rude. "K, I'll be sure to tell her you came by, Chad." The bell rung again as Chad left the poffin shop and stepped out into the fresh, cool air. Chad checked his Pok?tch for the time. 8:14. "Great, what am I gonna do for two hours.." He asked himself. Chad went up and down the streets trying to find something interesting to do by himself. He hadn't been alone for so long he had forgot what it felt like. When he stumbled across the contest hall he watched the ending of a contest battle. A Teddiursa lost against a Lopunny after a few minutes and the next contest didn't start until 10:30. It was now 9:00 exactly and Chad still had nothing to do. 'Just one hour to go.' He told himself for about 3 minutes, trying to see if the time went by any faster. Chad was walking down the street when he thought he heard someone shout his name. He stopped and perked his head upward. "Chad!" He heard it again. Chad turned around just in time to see Sarah sprinting towards him. "Chad! Oh my gosh it is you! Nadine from the poffin shop told me you were here and i've been looking all over the place for you!" Chad smiled and ran over to Sarah who he gave a big hug to. "I can't believe it, what are you doing here?" Chad wasn't sure what to say but he didn't need to as Sarah interrupted herself. "How are you?" She asked. "I'm great now that I actually found you." He said, smiling. "This is so amazing, I've missed you so much." Sarah said as she hugged Chad again. The street they happened to be on was crowded and Sarah suggested they go somewhere less jam packed.
The two decided on Amity Square, where they had first met. Sarah talked on and on about how she had missed Chad and couldn't believe he was really here. All the while Chad felt more and more guilty as he knew what he had to do. He would tell her soon, he told himself. Chad walked past the lady at the gate without releasing a Pok?mon and Sarah did the same. "Do you know how long you're gonna be here?" Sarah asked after a moment of silence. "Still not sure." Chad answered. "As long as I have to, I guess." Luckily, Sarah didn't ask what he meant.

Sarah and Chad were just about the only ones in the park at this hour and it was nice to be alone in such a big, beautiful environment. "Ooh!" Sarah said, pointing to a medium sized body of water. "Wanna go swimming?" She asked him. "I don't know, I mean it's kind of early." Chad answered. "Come on, pleeeeease?" Sarah insisted. After a few minutes of argument Chad finally agreed to go swimming. Sarah blushed as she took of her clothes to reveal a purple one piece bathing suit with a yellow stripe around the abdomen. Chad was wearing a plain, black bathing suit. "Maybe I'll see that Gyrados from before." Chad said to himself. "What Gyrados?" Sarah asked as she took her toe out of the water, she had been testing the temperature. "Don't worry, it was friendly." Chad assured her. He proceeded to tell her the story of how last time he was here he had met a friendly, shiny Gyrados and he had ridden it. "I always kind of regret never catching it." He finished. Sarah didn't really believe his story. She slid into the water and told Chad it was a lot warmer once you got in. Chad slowly made his way into the water, which was in fact warmer after he got used to it. Sarah splashed him playfully and he splashed her back. Chad dunked, closing his eyes and when he came back up he heard Sarah say, "Oh my gosh, how cute." He looked over to see a small Octillery grabbing onto Sarah with one tentacle. Chad reached out to pet the Octillery and it let go of Sarah's arm and instead grabbed his. "Haha.." Chad said as he stroked it softly. Another Octillery popped up suddenly and startled Chad, this one grabbed onto his other arm. "Woah." Chad said as he now swam with just his feet. Before he knew it, more Octillery had surfaced and each one latched onto Chad. The Octillery began to pull Chad down, deeper and deeper. Chad was drowning.
Chad opened his eyes underwater as he heard a roar. A red Gyrados, the same red Gyrados was charging straight at him. All of the Octillery that had been gripping tightly onto Chad now released their hold at the sight of the giant Pok?mon. The Gyrados lifted Chad onto his back and swam up to the surface, but not before Chad had caught a glimpse of a hand coming out from the seaweed down near the bottom.
Chad swallowed the air greedily as he surfaced and Sarah began to ask questions, trying to make sure Chad was ok. Chad and Sarah swam to shore and the Gyrados followed. Sarah pulled herself up and quickly offered Chad a hand, which he took. Sarah helped Chad up and began to ask questions again. Chad looked back into the water where the Gyrados still was, looking up at him with hopeful eyes. Suddenly something strange began to happen to the Pok?mon, it began to change. "What the..." Chad said as he watched on in amazment. After several seconds the Gyrados was gone and in its place was a shiny, small Ditto.

"No way..." Chad said as he stared at the Pok?mon before him. "A Ditto! I have to catch it!" Chad was so busy with the Pok?mon he almost forgot about drowning and about seeing the hand. Chad grabbed for two Pok?Balls, one to capture the Pok?mon and one to weaken it with one of his own Pok?mon. Before he had a chance to send out a Pok?mon, the Ditto had climbed over to Chad and pressed the button on the empty pokeball. The Ditto was sucked inside by a bright light and the ball didn't shake at all, it immediately made a dinging sound. Chad already had six Pok?mon with him and he watched sadly as the Pokeball holding Ditto was transported automatically to his PC storage system. "Ok, great, you caught a Pok?mon. Now can you please tell me you're ok?" Sarah said somewhat rudely, but with good intentions. Chad suddenly remembered the Hand. "No, i'm not ok. There's a body in that lake." Sarah took a few minutes to process this before yelling, "What?!" Chad was startled by this, as Sarah was generally a quiet girl. "We have to do something." She said. Chad's expression turned sullen. "I don't think there's much we can do, except if she had any Pok?mon I suppose we could save them." Sarah rushed to the water. "Well if that's the best we can do, we're doing it." Chad stopped her by grabbing onto her arm. "Wait, I'll go." Sarah pushed his arm off immediately. "No, you've already been in that water once, you don't know how scary it was to see you being pulled down like that." "Exactly." Chad said, "I've been down there before, I know where the body is, you don't. You could waste breath searching for it. I'm going down." With that, Chad jumped into the water and began searching.

Within the first 10 seconds underwater Chad spotted the hand. Without a moment's hesitation he dove deeper until he could see the whole body. The body was that of a female, she was young. Chad felt a bit of remorse as he snatched the Pok?Balls off of the trainer's belt. He had been down in the water for about half a minute now and he was losing his breath quickly. The frontier Master knew he couldn't just do this, someone out there had to miss this child. Chad reached into the trainer's pocket and found a Pok?dex, just what he was looking for. Now Chad couldn't hold his breath any longer and he kicked off the bottom and surfaced. Sarah had been pacing around as she waited for Chad's head to pop up from underneath the clear water. Bubbles indicated that Chad would be up soon and Sarah was ready to help Chad onto the land. Sarah watched as Chad took a deep intake of air before plopping down three Pok?Balls and a Pok?dex onto the ground. Sarah helped Chad up. When Chad was all set with oxygen the two trainers picked up the Pok?dex to check out who the body down there had once been. "Jillian Kemp." Chad read aloud as the bright screen of the Pok?dex showed the same face from the lake. Sarah began to read Jillian's hometown and age and other information stored on the the Pok?dex, but Chad wasn't listening, he was busy picking up the Pok?Balls. There were three of them in total and Chad layed them out one at a time. Chad picked up the first and released the Pok?mon it held in a flash of blue light. Chad wasn't quite sure what it was at first but he soon recognized it as a Shedinja. The next ball held a Spinda and the third was home to a Kecleon. "Chad, we should find Jillian's parents." Sarah said after she had finished reading the information on Jillian. "Yeah, we can ask them what to do with these Pok?mon. They may want to keep them." Chad noted. "She lived here in Hearthome and her house is close by, let's go right now." Sarah suggested. Chad and Sarah changed back into their clothes and gathered their things before they set out to leave. "Come on," Chad said to the three Pok?mon who hadn't left their side since their release. "You're coming with us."

"There it is." Sarah said, pointing to a small house on the outskirts of Hearthome city. Sarah rung the doorbell and waited patiently. A friendly looking man with gray hair and glasses greeted the two at the door. "Hello," He said cheerfully. Sarah was quick to the point. "Hi," She said. "Are you Mr. Kemp?" She asked. Mr. Kemp had no idea that the news he was about to receive would be the saddest news he had ever heard. "I'm not sure how to say this.." Sarah said, looking down. Chad took over from there. "Um, may we come in?" He asked politely. Mr. Kemp invited them in and the three of them sat down in the living room. "This is my wife, Marcia." Mr. Kemp said as a plump woman with fading red hair walked through the room. "Hello there." Marcia said with a smile. Chad and Sarah returned the smile but their faces quickly turned back to more serious, sad ones. "Y-you may want to stay, Marcia." Sarah said as Marcia began to head into another room. The woman looked somewhat confused but she sat down anyways. Sarah looked to Chad and he knew that she didn't want to be the one to tell them the bad news. "Jillian," Chad began, hesitating. "Jillian is... She's dead." Mr. and Mrs. Kemp were shocked and neither said a word. Marcia's eyes began to fill with tears. "No," Mr. Kemp said suddenly. "No, they're lying. You're lying. Is this your idea of a joke?" He began to make up excuses, trying to deny the fact that his only daughter was now gone. "We're not lying." Sarah said sadly. By now Marcia was crying loudly. "Well then you must be mistaken. Jillian is not-" Chad reached for the Pok?dex and brought up the screen with Jillian's face on it. Mr. Kemp stopped mid sentence and tears began to well up in his eyes. Chad and Sarah sat there, listening to the wailing of the old couple as they tried to cope with the news they had received.

Mr. and Mrs. Kemp had controlled themselves now and Chad decided it would be good time to bring up the Pok?mon that had once been Jillian's. "Jillian's Pok?mon," Chad said, pointing over to the three Pok?mon which had been pretty calm since they got there. "We didn't know whether to release them or see if you maybe wanted to keep them." Mr. Kemp had left the room and Mrs. Kemp was the only one there. Her face looked like everyone's did after they had been crying and she cleared her throat before saying, "We um, we don't want them. It's just..It's just too hard. But please, don't release them. Jillian liked to catch Pok?mon when they were young and I think she may have hatched one of them from an egg." She began to cry again for a short time before continuing. "What i'm...What i'm trying to say is, her Pok?mon don't know how to be wild. They wouldn't survive a day out there. Please," She looked directly at Chad. "Please, you look like you can handle it, can you please take care of them?" Chad didn't want to dissappoint this woman who had already heard enough bad news in this short time. "Yes, of course." He grabbed three empty Pok?Balls from his bag and pressed their buttons against the three Pok?mon. Like Ditto, these Pok?mon didn't struggle and allowed themselves to be caught quite easily. "We should go." Sarah said as Mr. Kemp walked in the room and began to comfort his wife who had begun to cry again. The two said goodbye and they left the house, not talking to each other until some time.

The three Pok?Balls containing Jillian's old Pok?mon and Chad's new ones dissppeared shortly after Chad and Sarah left the Kemp's house. It was late now and Sarah had to pull out a flashlight in order for them to see where they were going. Chad walked Sarah home, or rather she walked them both as Chad didn't know where she lived. 'I'll tell her soon.' He told himself as he made his way to the Pok?Center. 'I've given enough bad news today, I just wanna get some rest.' The doors to the Pok?Center slid open as Chad stepped on the mat. He greeted Nurse Joy and walked over to the PC where he stored all his Pok?mon but Alakazam and Eevee. He then withdrew his new Pok?mon, Ditto, Shedinja, Spinda and Kecleon. He gave Nurse Joy a three fingered wave as he headed up to his room, which was all the way at the end of the long hall upstairs. After Chad brushed his teeth and put on his pajamas he sat down in bed and decided to officially greet his new Pok?mon. Chad first released Ditto and the white light soon turned into a blue blob as the Pok?mon appeared. "Hey." He said as he smiled and touched its gelatinous form. Ditto wiggled around like jello on the bed. Next, Chad sent out Spinda and upon its release Ditto transformed into it. Chad now had two Spindas on his bed, one with green markings and one with red. He pet the real Spinda and greeted it before releasing Kecleon and then Shedinja. The Pok?mon already knew each other well and they began talking in pokespeak to one another. Chad had no idea what they were saying but they kept looking to their new trainer every now and then and he assumed they were talking about him. "Um, anyways." Chad said, interrupting Kecleon. "This is Eevee, and this is Alakazam." He said pointing to two white lights that were spilling from the Pok?Balls Chad had just taken off his belt. More pokespeak filled the air as Chad's new Pok?mon conversed with his old ones. Finally, the talking ceased and Chad took this opportunity to say goodnight to his Pok?mon and return them before resting his head on his pillow and falling asleep.
Not for the first time, Chad awoke without covers and looked to his right to find them on the floor. He got out of bed and showered before dressing, flossing, brushing his teeth, and washing his mouth with the mouthwash he found next to his sink. "Good morning." Joy said cheerfully as Chad walked into the lobby. He was surprised to find Sarah waiting for him when he got down there. "Hi." She said to him as she smiled wide. "How long have you been waiting?" Chad asked. "Not long, look, there's something I have to tell you." Chad hoped it wasn't something like, 'I can't live without you.' knowing if he heard that the guilt of breaking up with Sarah would kill him. "I don't...Chad I don't think this relationship can work anymore." Chad was stunned. He had come all this way to break up with Sarah and she had broken up with him. "Are you ok?" She asked sympathetically. "Yeah, I'm fine and I totally agree with you. The reason I came to Hearthome in the first place was to tell you that I don't think I can stay true to you. I really like Jessica right now but I'm not sure how things stand with us. I need you to know that I still care about you but I just don't think this can work." Chad took a deep breath and hugged Sarah. "I guess you should get going." Sarah said after a moment of embrace. "Yeah." Chad agreed. "Goodbye, Chad." Sarah said as she stood up and walked out of the center, leaving Chad to think. Chad sat in the seat for a few minutes before realizing he should get going.
As Chad walked down the streets of Hearthome he released two Pok?mon, Eevee and Ditto who transformed into Eevee shortly after its release. On Chad's left shoulder was the normal Eevee and on his right was a gray Eevee, Ditto. "Time to get going." He said to the two Pok?mon as he walked towards a sign that would tell him where the nearest ferry would be. Along the way, Chad noticed a man stroking his Pidgeott. Suddenly, Ditto transformed into the Pidgeot, only difference being its golden shiny feathers instead of the usual brownish ones. Chad returned Eevee as he got an idea. He climbed aboard Ditto and whispered to it, "To the Hoenn region."
